“You know you don’t have rockstar status when…”
So my band Make Your Mark played our first show out of Leeds today! Despite being tired from the partying the night before, we were all super excited that we were getting to play in Manchester!
We hung out and got Taco Bell, then watched a couple of the bands that were on before us as part of an “All-dayer”. The room seemed a bit empty and we figured it was maybe not gonna be as cool as we hoped. Glad to say we were wrong! By the time we had to play at 18:30 there was a good 30-40 people in the room which wasn’t particularly massive, and it made for a pretty good atmosphere.
I’m confident we absolutely smashed it! Despite falling asleep briefly during the band that was on before us, there was a sick rush of energy by the time we began our set! Safe to say I went mental! Someone described me as “A monkey with a migraine!” and I was completely soaked through by the time we’d finished.
As soon as we finish a guy comes over to me and shakes my hand and says “That was a really good set man”…..safe to say I appreciated this….but was shortly followed by “but when you were going mental you broke my sunglasses” to which he presented me a completely mangled set of sunglasses. I was apologetic, obviously, but thought he’d just kinda laugh it off. Nope. He asked me if i’d pay him £25 to replace his shades. (why someone had sunglasses in a dark, dingy basement show is…well…..why!?) Almost managed to put a complete downer on the entire trip. Being the guy that I am though, I took him to a cash machine and got him the money so he could by a new pair. At the end of the day, if that had happened to me with something of mine, and I had the balls to ask the person who broke it to replace it, then I’d almost expect them to be decent and do it.
So despite it costing me £25 to play a show in Manchester, I am content in the knowledge that I absolutely poured every bit of energy/heart/soul into playing tonight in a small hope that I could entertain some strangers for 30 minutes….and that I am pretty much the nicest guy in the world.
Like I should have an award or something. Super serials.
